Why Add Battery Storage?
Without a battery, a typical solar household uses only 30-40% of the electricity its panels generate. The rest is exported to the grid for a few pence per kilowatt hour, while you then buy electricity back at full price in the evening. A home battery changes this equation entirely — storing your surplus solar energy during the day and releasing it when you need it most.
Store Solar for Evening Use
Your solar panels generate most electricity during the middle of the day when you may be at work. A battery stores this energy and releases it from 4pm onwards when household demand peaks — cooking, heating water, running appliances, and charging devices.
Charge From Cheap Tariffs
Even without solar panels, a battery can save you hundreds annually. Charge overnight on tariffs like Octopus Go (7.5p/kWh) and discharge during peak hours (24.5p/kWh). This tariff arbitrage — buying cheap and avoiding expensive — can save £500–700 per year on a 10kWh daily cycle.
Backup Power Protection
Many battery systems — including Tesla Powerwall — offer backup power capability. During a grid outage, your battery automatically switches to backup mode, keeping essential circuits running until power is restored.
Increase Self-Consumption to 80%+
Adding battery storage to a solar system typically increases self-consumption from 30-40% to over 80%. This means you use the vast majority of the electricity your panels generate rather than exporting it at a fraction of the retail price.
Smart Tariff Arbitrage — The Numbers
A home battery lets you buy electricity when it is cheap and avoid buying it when it is expensive. With Octopus Go, the off-peak rate is 7.5p/kWh (midnight–5am). The standard Ofgem price cap rate is 24.5p/kWh. Charging 10kWh overnight and discharging it during peak hours saves around £1.70 per day — over £600 per year.
| Scenario | Rate | 10kWh daily cost | Annual saving vs peak |
|---|---|---|---|
| Buy at peak (no battery) | 24.5p/kWh | £2.45 | — |
| Octopus Go off-peak charging | 7.5p/kWh | £0.75 | ~£620/year |
| Solar surplus (no export) | 0p/kWh | £0 | ~£895/year |
Based on Ofgem April 2026 price cap (24.5p/kWh) and Octopus Go overnight rate (7.5p/kWh, midnight–5am). Actual savings depend on battery capacity, usage patterns, and tariff availability.

How Battery Storage Works
A home battery sits between your solar panels (or grid connection) and your home's electrical circuits. It intelligently manages energy flow to maximise your savings throughout the day.
During the Day
Your solar panels generate electricity. Your home uses what it needs immediately — running appliances, hot water, and lighting. Any surplus energy flows into the battery rather than being exported to the grid. Once the battery is full, any remaining surplus is exported and you earn from the Smart Export Guarantee.
Evening and Overnight
As the sun sets and solar generation drops, your battery takes over. It discharges stored energy to power your home through the evening peak — the most expensive time to buy electricity from the grid. If configured for smart tariff integration, the battery can then charge from cheap overnight electricity (as low as 7p/kWh) ready for the next day.
Pair battery storage with solar panels for maximum savings, or add an EV charger to charge your vehicle from stored solar energy. Explore the Tesla Powerwall 3 — our most popular battery system. Frequently Asked Questions
A home battery stores electricity for use later — either solar energy generated during the day or cheap off-peak electricity from the grid. This means you can use stored energy in the evening when electricity rates are highest, significantly reducing your bills. Popular systems include Tesla Powerwall 3 and GivEnergy.
Home battery storage systems typically cost between £3,000 and £10,000 depending on capacity and brand. A Tesla Powerwall 3 (13.5kWh) is at the premium end, while smaller 5-10kWh systems from GivEnergy offer more affordable options. All domestic battery installations currently benefit from 0% VAT.
Yes, retrofitting a battery to an existing solar system is one of our most common installations. The battery connects to your existing inverter (or we can install a hybrid inverter if needed) and begins storing surplus solar energy that would otherwise be exported to the grid for minimal return.
The Tesla Powerwall 3 is Tesla's latest home battery system. It stores 13.5kWh of energy, includes a built-in hybrid inverter, and manages both solar generation and battery storage in a single wall-mounted unit. It integrates with the Tesla app for real-time monitoring and control. As Tesla Certified Installers, we are authorised to supply, install, and commission the Powerwall 3.
No. Standalone batteries can save you money even without solar panels by charging from cheap overnight electricity tariffs (like Octopus Go at around 7-10p/kWh) and discharging during expensive peak hours (24-30p/kWh). This tariff arbitrage can save £400–600 per year depending on your usage.
