Andersen A2 EV Charger Review: British Design Comes to Yorkshire

Most home EV chargers are functional plastic boxes. They get the job done, they connect to an app, they charge your car overnight — and visually, they fade into the background of your home. The Andersen A2 is the exception. Designed and hand-finished in Wiltshire by a small British team, the A2 is built around a single defining feature: every cable, plug and tail stores inside the unit when not in use, leaving a clean, minimal cabinet on the wall in one of eleven bespoke fascia finishes — including real wood veneers.

Premier Electrical Renewables has recently joined the Andersen Approved Installer Network, meaning we are now authorised to fit, commission and warrant the A2 and A2 Lite to Andersen's specification across Yorkshire and Greater Manchester. This guide explains what makes the A2 different, who it suits, and how it compares to the other premium chargers we install — Zappi, Tesla Wall Connector, Ohme Home Pro, and Hypervolt Home 3 Pro.

What the A2 Actually Is

The Andersen A2 is a 7.4kW single-phase tethered home EV charger. On paper, those numbers match every other premium charger on the UK market. What separates it is everything around the numbers — the industrial design, the materials, and the way it integrates into the front elevation of a home.

The cabinet itself is a powder-coated metal enclosure, slightly deeper than competitor units, with a hinged front fascia. Inside that fascia, the tethered Type 2 cable is wrapped around an internal storage drum and fed out through a small aperture at the bottom. When the cable is fully retracted, the front of the unit shows nothing but the fascia panel — no hanging cable, no exposed plug, no rubber holster. From the road, the charger reads as a flush metal panel rather than a piece of equipment.

Andersen offers eleven fascia options: powder-coated metals (Pearl White, Slate Grey, Sage, Olive, Pebble, Graphite, Ember Red) and three real wood veneers (Walnut, Oak, Steamed Beech). All fascias are user-swappable and clip into place with concealed fixings, so the charger can be re-styled if you redecorate or change the colour of your front door.

The A2 vs the A2 Lite

Andersen now offers two models. The A2 is the flagship — full Konnect+ connectivity (WiFi plus 4G fallback), all eleven fascia options including the wood veneers, and the longer 8m cable option for harder driveways. From £1,499 installed through Premier Electrical Renewables. The A2 Lite, launched in 2024, uses the same chassis and hidden-cable mechanism but ships with WiFi-only Konnect connectivity, four powder-coated fascia colours (Pearl White, Slate Grey, Pebble, Graphite), and a 5.5m cable. From £1,099 installed.

For most domestic installs on a reliable home WiFi network, the Lite is functionally indistinguishable from the full A2. The two scenarios where the flagship A2 makes sense: if you specifically want a wood-veneer fascia, or if your home WiFi is unreliable and you want the 4G fallback so the charger never drops off the smart-tariff scheduler.

How It Compares to Zappi, Tesla, Ohme and Hypervolt

We install all five of these chargers and recommend each of them to different customers. Here's how the A2 fits into the lineup:

  • Andersen A2 — Best for kerb appeal and architectural integration. Period homes, conservation areas, premium new-builds. From £1,099–£1,499 installed.
  • myenergi Zappi — Best for solar surplus diversion. The most mature solar-integrated charger on the UK market. From £1,100 installed.
  • Tesla Wall Connector — Best for Tesla drivers. Native vehicle integration, Powerwall ecosystem. From £1,050 installed.
  • Ohme Home Pro — Best for smart-tariff savings. Native Octopus Intelligent Go integration, automatic scheduling. From £950 installed.
  • Hypervolt Home 3 Pro — Best for build quality and award-winning aesthetics. IP66, IK10, Made in Britain. From £1,000 installed.

The A2 is the only charger in this group designed primarily around how it looks on the front of a home. On every other axis — solar diversion, smart-tariff integration, dynamic load management, build quality — it is competitive with the best, but not category-leading. If aesthetics matter to you as much as function, the A2 is the only realistic choice. If aesthetics are secondary, one of the other four chargers will save you money.

Solar Integration and Smart Tariffs

The A2 supports solar surplus diversion via an optional CT clamp installed in your consumer unit. Andersen's Konnect+ cloud platform reads real-time grid import/export from the clamp and automatically adjusts charging speed to match available solar surplus — same principle as the Zappi's ECO+ mode and the Hypervolt's Super Eco mode. We typically install the CT clamp at the same time as the charger to avoid a return visit.

On the smart-tariff side, the A2 integrates natively with Octopus Go, Intelligent Octopus, OVO Charge Anytime, EDF GoElectric and E.ON Drive — schedule charging to coincide with sub-10p/kWh windows automatically, no daily configuration required. For customers on Intelligent Octopus, we'd still give the edge to the Ohme Home Pro for access to the full 6-hour cheap-rate window, but the A2's tariff support is solid.

Why We Joined the Andersen Approved Installer Network

Andersen runs a deliberately small approved installer network across the UK. Approval requires NICEIC accreditation, completion of Andersen's installer training programme, and a track record of premium domestic EV charger installations. Each install is registered directly with Andersen for warranty and post-install support.

For us, the partnership made sense because the A2 fills a genuine gap in our charger range. We had four excellent functional chargers — Zappi, Tesla, Ohme, Hypervolt — but none of them aimed primarily at customers for whom kerb appeal is non-negotiable. Period properties in Wetherby and Harrogate, conservation-area homes around York, premium new-builds across Leeds and Manchester — these are markets where the visual of the charger genuinely affects the customer's decision. The Andersen A2 lets us recommend a charger that visibly upgrades the front of a home rather than apologising for its existence.

Installation in Yorkshire and Greater Manchester

We install the A2 and A2 Lite across our full service area — Leeds, Wakefield, York, Harrogate, Sheffield, Bradford, Huddersfield, Doncaster, Barnsley, Hull, Manchester, Bolton, Wigan and all surrounding postcodes. Standard installation includes electrical survey, dedicated 32A radial circuit from your consumer unit, OZEV-compliant earthing, commissioning to Andersen's specification, registration of your warranty, and walkthrough of the Konnect / Konnect+ app.

Most A2 installs complete in a single day. Where the consumer unit needs upgrading or the cable run is unusually long, we'll quote any additional work transparently up front — no surprises on the day.

Who the A2 Is For

The Andersen A2 is for homeowners who:

  • Live in a period property, conservation area, or premium new-build where the front elevation matters
  • Want a charger that visibly upgrades the kerb appeal of their driveway rather than detracting from it
  • Care about UK manufacturing and direct UK technical support
  • Want hidden cable storage so the unit looks clean when not in use
  • Are happy to pay £200–£500 more than a comparable functional charger for the design advantage

If your priority is the lowest possible cost per mile (Ohme Home Pro), the deepest solar integration (Zappi), or seamless Tesla ecosystem integration (Tesla Wall Connector), you'll be better served by one of those. If the look of the charger on your home matters to you, the A2 is the only realistic choice on the UK market — and we're now an Approved Installer for it.
