Solar Panel Grants & 0% VAT Explained for 2026

One of the most frequently asked questions we receive at Premier Electrical Renewables is whether there are any grants available for solar panels. The honest answer is that for most homeowners, there is no direct grant to cover the cost of a solar panel installation. However, the financial incentives available in 2026 are still significant, and they make solar more affordable than it has ever been. In this guide, we explain exactly what financial support is available, who qualifies, and why 2026 is an excellent time to invest in solar panels for your home.

0% VAT on Solar Panels: The Biggest Incentive

Since April 2022, the UK government has applied a 0% VAT rate to the supply and installation of energy-saving materials on residential properties. This means that solar panels, inverters, battery storage systems (when installed alongside or after solar panels), and all associated labour are zero-rated for VAT. Previously, these installations attracted the standard 20% VAT rate, so this change represents a substantial saving. On a typical 4kW solar panel system costing around 6,500 pounds, the VAT saving is approximately 1,300 pounds compared to what the same system would have cost before April 2022.

The 0% VAT rate applies to installations on dwellings and certain residential accommodation, including houses, flats, bungalows, and houseboats used as a primary residence. It covers solar photovoltaic panels, solar thermal panels, battery storage, heat pumps, insulation, and other energy efficiency measures. The scheme was initially set to run until March 2027, and whilst it is widely expected to be extended, there is no guarantee. If you have been considering solar panels, acting while the 0% VAT rate is confirmed in place is a sensible approach.

The ECO4 Scheme: Free Solar for Eligible Households

The Energy Company Obligation (ECO4) is a government scheme that requires large energy suppliers to fund energy efficiency improvements in low-income and vulnerable households. Under ECO4, eligible homeowners and tenants can receive fully funded solar panel installations at no personal cost. Eligibility is based on a combination of household income, property energy rating, and whether you receive certain qualifying benefits such as Universal Credit, Pension Credit, Child Tax Credit, or Income-Based Jobseeker's Allowance.

The ECO4 scheme runs until March 2026, and a successor scheme is expected. If you believe you may qualify, your energy supplier or a local authority referral can start the process. It is worth noting that ECO4 installations are means-tested and prioritise the least energy-efficient homes (EPC rating D or below), so not all applicants will be approved. However, if you do qualify, it is an exceptional opportunity to get solar panels at no cost.

Smart Export Guarantee: Ongoing Income from Your Solar

The Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) is not a grant, but it provides ongoing financial returns from your solar panel system. Under the SEG, energy suppliers with more than 150,000 customers are required to offer a tariff for surplus electricity exported to the grid from small-scale renewable generation. In practice, this means that every unit of solar electricity you generate but do not use in your home is sold to your energy supplier at an agreed rate per kWh.

SEG rates in 2026 range from around 4 pence to 15 pence per kWh, depending on the supplier and tariff type. While these rates are lower than the cost of buying electricity from the grid (around 24 pence per kWh), they still provide meaningful income over the lifetime of your system. A typical 4kW system exporting 50% of its generation at an average SEG rate of 8 pence per kWh earns approximately 145 pounds per year. Over 25 years, that totals over 3,600 pounds in export income alone. To receive SEG payments, your installation must be MCS certified, which all Premier Electrical Renewables installations are as standard.

Boiler Upgrade Scheme: Not for Solar, but Worth Knowing

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) provides grants of 7,500 pounds towards the cost of installing an air source heat pump or ground source heat pump to replace a fossil fuel heating system. This grant does not apply directly to solar panels, but it is worth mentioning because many homeowners who install solar panels also consider heat pumps as part of a broader move towards electrifying their home energy. If you are planning both solar panels and a heat pump, the BUS grant can significantly reduce the total investment. The scheme is currently funded through to 2028.

Why 2026 Is the Best Time to Go Solar

Even without a direct government grant for most homeowners, the financial case for solar panels in 2026 is the strongest it has ever been. The combination of 0% VAT saving you over a thousand pounds on installation, high electricity prices making every kWh you generate more valuable, Smart Export Guarantee income for your surplus electricity, and panel and battery prices that have stabilised after years of decline creates a uniquely favourable environment. The typical payback period for a residential solar system in Yorkshire is now 6 to 9 years, after which you benefit from free electricity for the remaining 15 to 20 years of your panel warranty.

At Premier Electrical Renewables, we help homeowners across Yorkshire navigate the available incentives and design systems that maximise the financial return. Our free, no-obligation survey includes a personalised savings calculation showing your expected payback period, annual savings, and SEG income based on your actual electricity usage and roof characteristics.
